Welcome to Going Green Family! We're working on responding to climate change in a productive, positive and manageable way. We can weed out those ice-cap melting habits, teach our kids to think green, be part of the big solution, and have fun along the way. As an added bonus, the changes we make for the earth also happen to be great for our health and budgets. All the more reason to go green!
So, how does it work? It's kind of like a book club. You get a group of neighbors and friends together and take turns hosting meetings once a month. We have discussion guides you can use to structure your meetings, which are centered around a different focus area each month. After your group educates each other about the issue at hand, you choose a few goals to work on over the next month, talk about your challenges and celebrate your successes. You can also take on a Super Challenge, an experiment that encourages you to step outside of your everyday routine and try something new.
This month, in celebration of Earth Day, we're thinking about starting a garden in the yard. For those of us with black thumbs, the thought of gardening is a bit daunting. But the urban agriculture movment is on the rise as people living in cities seek a healthier, more sustainable local food system. We burn through a lot of fuel transporting produce from the farm to the city, storing and refrigerating it at the market and driving to the store and back to buy our groceries every week. Growing our own vegetables, herbs, flowers - even chickens - is a great way to lighten our environmental load. Click here for an overview of the situation and here for ways we can respond.
